Upon my doom scroll session on Twitter I stumbled upon this wonderful piece of art that instantly caught my eye. A beautiful sea of blue plastered by a striking orange fox. His tired droopy eyes immediately sucked me in. The rugged lines and the asymmetric proportions of a suit remind me of a velvety essence only jazz can capture. The tired but away eyes, the fox dude’s slightly tired posture and the cigarette feel like the melody of a sleepy salty saxophone.
I had the privilege of having a brief conversation with the artist Joel Nnogo. Joel simply described Foxdude as a nameless character he has been doodling since 2018 and says he is meant to be “a depiction of a nervous young man”. I think the lack of lore adds more to the endearing and mysterious nature of Foxdude what makes him anxious? What makes him nervous? What does his life look like? These are but a few questions I can’t help but ask myself whenever I get lost in his wandering eyes.
